Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
