Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to question specific calls from the official, following the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
